King Charles III series of commemorative coins for New Zealand Post
celebrating the Coronation of a King.
Fuller.Studio were asked by New Zealand Post to design and illustrate a collectable series of six coins, four Gold and two silver mint including the packages and certificates for those. We were honoured to be involved with this project which was made even more prestigious for us, when I was asked to illustrate the effigy of the King for the reverse side of the coins, which as it happens, will now go on to adorn the collectable coins yet to be produced by the New Zealand Post for the foreseeable future.
It’s not every day you get to put your initials next to an effigy of the reigning monarch.
The two Silver coins included full colour, one which was to use a Photograph of King Charles III pictured Suited in his Ambassador role and the other coin we chose to show the King in the uniform of the Scots Guards for which I did a Painting that is shown below.
The annual coin for 2021 features the extinct Auckland Island Merganser Mergus australis. It is part of a range of coins and stamps that celebrate New Zealand's taonga, culture, heritage, arts, stories and people. This annual coin series, focusing on extinct animals, highlights New Zealand’s unique environment, biodiversity and conservation issues.
The sexes of the Auckland Island merganser were similar to each other, but males were larger and had an obvious and elongated crest. The head and neck were dark brown, the entire upper body dark grey, and the breast and abdomen dull greyish-brown. The upper wings were slate grey, and the lower wing coverts were darker and banded white. The middle secondary flight feathers were white on the outer web and black on the inner web and tips, with the primary flight feathers and inner secondaries tending blackish. The eyes were dark brown, and the upper bill black but with its cutting edge and the lower mandible yellowish-orange; the legs and feet were orange. Immature birds were darker versions of the adults. Ducklings were dark brown-black above with yellowish-white underparts. Their bill, legs and feet were dark olive-brown.
These small Moths found in different places around New Zealand collectively were, while each distinctively patterned, took on an overall Brown/Black tone and therefore difficult to discern at first glance. To make them really individually distinctive they have each been placed on a Neon colour which is hard to capture in Photography but viewed in real life certainly ping out of the envelope. By making each Moth one half and visually marrying it up with the next one we were able to get the Moth up in scale on the stamp as well as visually make up complete moths for the series of 6.
This Kowhai coin is part of New Zealand Post’s annual commemorative coin programme. The coin features Kōwhai flowers encompassed by leaves as part of the Discover New Zealand series.
The Kowhai tree was selected because it is one of the best-known native trees in New Zealand and it’s our unofficial national flower.

This was to encourage donations of these sums to the Forest & Bird environmental protection society of New Zealand.
